Against the Storm

Soap opera that ran from 1939 to 1952

(18 Episodes)
"Against the Storm," another OTR soap opera (the title of which is from 'King Lear'), began the first of its 3 runs (and a small portion of its 13 years of success) on NBC, October 16, 1939. The final episode of this soap opera, took place on the Mutual Broadcasting System (MBS), June 27, 1952. Created and written by Sandra Michael, directed by Axel Gruenberg and starring Roger DeKoven, Gertrude Warner, Arnold Moss and Joan Alexander, this program took place at the "Deep Pool Farm" in Hawthorne, Connecticut.

It depicted the "every-day-lives" of the Professor (of Hawthorne's fictional Harper University) Jason McKinley Allen (Roger DeKoven, who starred during all 3 runs), his wife, their daughters & this family's many friends. The NBC 'Red Network' which ran "Against the Storm" from Oct '39 - to Dec '42, broadcast the only daytime radio serial to win a Peabody Award (1942).

Sadly, however, not even this successful win could save this excellent program from being axed, in Dec of '42, by the NBC radio 'highers-up.' "Against the Storm" went on a very nearly permanent hiatus, until August of 1949, when Mutual saved the resting serial; this was a short-lived save, because it was again dropped, in October of '49. The 3rd and final run of "Against the Storm" was with ABC, lasting from October 1951 until its final demise in June 1952.

* This very popular 15 minute radio program (followed each NBC afternoon, by another well known daytime drama, "The Guiding Light"), was sponsored entirely by Proctor & Gamble's 'Ivory Snow Flakes" Dish Soap (flakes which were actually shaved from the Ivory Soap bars), as well as by "99.44% pure" Ivory Snow Bar Soap.
* I have done an in-depth, on-line search for further episodes of this wonderfully, entertaining "SOAP", but have (So Far!!) been unsuccessful in finding more than the 18 episodes within this file. I have discovered reference to 5 other episodes (40/05/14 - Reed asks Cathy (with a "C") to Marry him; 40/07/09 - Cathy Composes a letter to Manuel; 49/04/25; 49/10/21; 51/10/01). However, these eps were only on a program episode list; I have been unable to find the actual physical proof of downloadable copies of these episodes.

* For those of you out there, who were fortunate enough to be alive during the hey-days of this outstanding programming, I do hope you thoroughly enjoy the wonderful stroll down memory lane!
