1. Markheim by Robert Louis Stevenson
A thief's eerie encounter with a stranger in a shop, forces him to reassess his life.


Hugh Bonneville reads 'Markheim' by master storyteller, Robert Louis Stevenson, first published in 1885 in Unwin's Christmas Annual.


2. Clytie by Eudora Welty
Watery parallels to Greek mythology, as life gets too much for a woman in Mississippi.


Clytie has lived for years in the shadow of her bullying sister and drunken brother. Suddenly, something snaps and she decides to take back control of her life.


The human heart and how it yearns for love and companionship is the subject of this dark tale by Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Eudora Welty [1909 - 2001]. A short story first published in 1941, in the collection 'A Curtain of Green'.

3. The Lady of the House of Love by Angela Carter
An unwary army officer meets the last of the Nosferatu family.


The tormented psyche of a female vampire is explored in a fantastical tale about loneliness and despair.


This lady-of-the-night pores over the tarot cards, desperately hoping that they might reveal a way of escaping from her existence.


Angela Carter's vampire tale with a twist, adapted from her radio play Vampirella from 1976.

4. Those Who Seek Forgiveness by Laurell K Hamilton
Legendary vampire hunter Anita Blake helps a woman revive her recently deceased husband. But why?


Laurell K Hamilton's dark tale set in an urban gothic world where vampires, werewolves and zombies live alongside human beings as part of everyday society.
