In 1946, the writers of the Superman radio show needed new villains now that the war was over. They were approached by Stetson Kennedy, who needed something himself - a way of publically demystifying the fearmongering organization he'd infiltrated, the Ku Klux Klan, which he feared had members in police forces and the government. The result was a storyline that would deal a blow to the Klan's recruitment and membership.
