Reading of James Follett's three, somewhat ponderous, to my taste, "Pentworth" novels.

Aliens land in a lake in the Sussex town of Pentworth. The inhabitants are unable to escape the area due to an invisible force field which encompasses the entire area. Why the aliens are there is unknown, but outside the force field, the residents can see Pentworth as it had been 40,000 years before.


Inside Pentworth, the leader of the local council and the head of a mysterious cult jointly take control and it is not long before some of the inhabitants are accused of withcraft.
