Frederick Palmer was already an experienced war correspondent when World War I began in 1914, as he had previously covered six wars, beginning with the Greco-Turkish War of 1897. "With the New Army on the Somme" was his second book about World War I. The story shifts between his first-person accounts from the trenches and Brigade Headquarters to narrations of distant campaigns, the role of the air war, strategic thinking by the Generals, and the coordination of the allies.
